CFTC appoints new chief economist

Wednesday 22 December 2010 - by Nicola York

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has appointed a new chief economist to provide expert economic advice to the Commission.

Dr Andrei Kirilenko has been with the CFTC since 2008 and prior to this, he spent 12 years at the International Monetary Fund where he worked in the area of global capital markets.

Kirilenko replaces Jeffrey Harris who returned to academia earlier this year, becoming a professor at the University of Delaware.

The Office of the Chief Economist's functions include policy analysis, economic research, expert testimony, education and training.

Kirilenko's research has focused on the microstructure of financial markets and more recently, he played a key role in analysing why the flash crash of 6 May occurred.

CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler said, "Andrei's in-depth understanding and appreciation of the many important economic issues facing the Commission and the futures and swaps markets will prove invaluable.

"I am very pleased that he has accepted this appointment. I look forward to continuing to work closely with him to ensure market integrity and protect the American public."
