Eddy Wymeersch, former Chairman of CESR

Monday 20 December 2010 - by Nicola York

With a major influence on revisions to Ucits and Mifid EU directives and policy on CDO trading and ratings agencies, the former chairman of the Committee of European Securities Regulators comes 41st in the GFS Power 50.

Wymeersch, having spent the first six months of 2010 as chairman of CESR before stepping down in July, played a major role in advising the European Commission on derivatives legislation and the regulation of credit rating agencies.

His task involved improving coordination amongst securities regulators, advising and assisting the Commission and ensuring legislation was implemented in member states.

The main focus of his work at CESR has been the revision of directives including Ucits and Mifid. He was also heavily involved in credit default swap trading on Greek bonds.

Wymeersch has been an active member of the International Organization of Securities Commission, where he was chairman of the European Regional Committee.

He has, notably, also overseen the evolution of CESR into the European Securities and Markets Authority, which is due to be operational from 1 January next year.

Having been chair of CESR for two years, Wymeersch is now chairman of the European Corporate Governance Institute where no doubt he will remain active in shaping regulation.
