CFTC set for Volcker rule vote
Thursday 5 January 2012 - by Andrew.Hickley@gfsnews.com
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission will propose its version of the Volcker Rule, which aims to curtail proprietary trading for banks in the US, during a meeting next week.
The agency will use its first open meeting of the year on 11 January to table the rule, it announced on Wednesday.
The proposals will come exactly three months after a number of agencies, including the Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, jointly issued their own measures.
CFTC chairman Gary Gensler has since said that the agency's rule will be "consistent" with the measures put forward by other regulators.
The CFTC's January meeting will also vote on final rules regarding the registration of swap dealers and major swap participants, conduct standards for swap dealers and major swap participants and amendments to commodity broker bankruptcy provisions.
