Frank and Bachus feud reaches new level of pettiness

Thursday 7 April 2011 - by Regulation Mutters

The escalating feud between Spencer Bachus and Barney Frank has seen its pettiest development yet, with the House Financial Services Committee chairman using the group's website to claim an imposter has been working in place of his predecessor Frank.

The pair are well known for jousting over issues from too-big-to-fail legislation to the possible regulation of online poker.

While giving up his chairmanship when the Democrats lost control of the House, Frank suggested that Bachus' staff would be "very busy getting him to retract statements" after the then incoming chair made remarks about Washington and financial regulators being there to "serve the banks" - comments which were indeed later retracted.

But in the latest development Bachus has clearly felt no shame in using the House Financial Services website to declare war on Frank's refusal to pursue a technical corrections bill to the Dodd-Frank Act he co-authored.

On Wednesday, Frank issued a statement saying he has no interest in pursuing a technical corrections bill and said that suggestions to the contrary must be coming from someone pretending to be him.

The press release from Bachus' office proclaims a "stunning development" with the chairman credited with unearthing a video (pictured) in which the "alleged Frank copycat" calls for a corrections bill "that goes beyond just minor things", recorded in a meeting of 29 June 2010.

Bachus ends: "Chairman Bachus suggests that anyone who sees this person pretending to be Barney Frank should contact Frank's office."

With a whole raft of vital Dodd-Frank legislation still left to be discussed, the Mutterer wonders whether the influential pair could perhaps be using their time more wisely.
